Women’s healthcare

Like so many Texans, Yasmin is outraged by the inhumane forced birth laws in Texas. She finds it intolerable that MAGA Republicans in Austin like her opponent, Morgan Meyer, support these extreme policies that hurt families and embarrass our state. Yasmin believes that abortion is a personal decision between a woman, her family, her faith, and her doctor. Morgan Meyer’s extreme votes that allow doctors to be prosecuted, bounties to be placed on women and allow no exceptions for rape and incest are just plain wrong. These abortion bans don’t just hurt families in House District 108 but also drive business and doctors away from Texas. Enough is enough. In Austin, Yasmin will stand with the majority of Texans to overturn these outrageous laws.

Gun Violence

As both a mom of three and a survivor of gun violence, Yasmin is ready to fight for common sense gun safety measures that reduce violence and keep our children and community here in House District 108 safe. She is a supporter of 2nd Amendment rights, but the status quo of mass gun violence is not acceptable. Protecting the 2nd Amendment does not require us to keep living in fear of sending our kids to school, going to the mall, or attending religious services. Our laws can both save lives and preserve personal freedoms but right now, they fall short. Lawmakers can do better. This means supporting background checks and extreme risk protection orders that keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Yasmin sides with the majority of Texans who support raising the minimum age to buy large cartridge long rifles from 18 to 21.

Education

Yasmin Simon is a proud public school kid. She knows the importance of our public school teachers and the benefits of a public school education. Yasmin supports fully and fairly funding Texas public schools to ensure that every Texas child has an opportunity to succeed and thrive. Our economy and our future in House District 108 depend on a well educated workforce that can compete and lead in the global economy. Unlike Republican Morgan Meyer, Yasmin strongly opposes vouchers and voucher schemes that pull money out of our public schools to pay for unregulated private schools that fail Texas families.

Property Taxes

Texas ranks in the top 10 for highest property taxes in the country and the average homeowner in Texas pays 58% more than the average American household. This has increased rents and home prices throughout our district, causing the cost of living to skyrocket. MAGA Republican Morgan Meyer was tasked with drafting legislation by his party, but his plan was such a disaster, his own party sidelined him. Morgan and his extremist friends had an opportunity to vote for property tax relief that more than doubled the homestead exemption, provided relief for renters, and raised teacher pay right here in House District 108 - but he voted no. Time and time again when House District 108 residents need him, Morgan Meyer comes up short.

Business-Friendly State

Despite having the second-largest economy in the United States, Texas has lost its top five ranking as a Top State for Business. Issues with infrastructure and education, as well as phony culture wars, have lessened the business-friendly environment. The 2021 power outages exposed serious weaknesses in our power grid and the state’s water system needs more than $61 billion in repairs. Per-pupil spending is among the nation’s lowest and Texas finished dead last in Life, Health & Inclusion because of poor healthcare access and the high uninsured rate. These issues make it harder for businesses to attract talent to the state and deter businesses from coming to  House District 108. This happened on Republican Morgan Meyer’s watch and with his support. That’s why we need to bring back an ethics-driven, business-minded, problem-solving approach to Austin.

Power Grid

The 2021 freeze exposed the growing issues with our power grid and caused nearly $200 billion in damages to our homes and businesses. Worst of all, hundreds of Texans lost their lives during the outage. Even after this crisis, there has been no lasting work to weatherize our grid, pipelines, and turbines, expand the generation capacity of renewable energy sources, cap the cost of gas during periods of high demand, or recoup the utility companies’ windfall profits to pay off the utility debt forced onto residents in House District 108. It is now commonplace for outages to occur during light freezes or heat waves. As a result, we are  now paying more for our utilities and property insurance. Meanwhile, Meyer and his MAGA buddies in Austin continue to offer no solutions to this ongoing problem.

Trusted Leadership

Yasmin believes voters deserve a government they can trust to serve them, not corrupt interests. It’s not a secret that many feel that our government is broken. Time and time again, Meyer votes with his party rather than what is best for the people that he represents. As your representative, Yasmin will embody integrity in Austin. She is deeply committed to our Texas values and will ensure that families of House District 108 finally receive the representation they deserve.

Protecting democracy

Democracy is under attack in Austin. We must fight against new laws that make it harder to vote and easier for the MAGA movement to threaten election workers, deny election results, and overthrow our democracy. Yasmin has been on the frontlines protecting voters. She knows that our freedoms and our democratic form of government are worth fighting for.

Protecting Our Kids

Yasmin knows the best investment we can make in our future is in our kids. Morgan Meyer is careless about protecting our children, he voted for HB 63 which prohibits the Department of Family and Protective Services from investigating child abuse reports made anonymously. The last thing kids in crisis need is a system that makes it less likely that their abuse is reported. In the legislature, Yasmin will be a champion for our children by pursuing legislation aimed at preventing abuse and neglect. Yasmin will fight to ensure children and families have access to resources and services to help their children thrive and Yasmin will advocate for the 30,000 children in Texas’s foster care system by standing up to extremist Republican efforts to underfund and outsource foster care.
